What They Are

What is an Emotional Support Animal?

An ESA is more than a pet — it is a clinically recommended part of your mental health treatment, recognized under federal law.

A companion for emotional well-being

An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is a pet that provides therapeutic comfort to someone experiencing a mental health condition. They are not trained to perform specific tasks — their presence alone is the treatment.

Protected by federal recognition

With a valid ESA letter from a licensed mental health professional, your animal is recognized under federal housing law (FHA), allowing you to live with your ESA even in no-pet housing.

Any animal can qualify

Unlike service animals, ESAs are not limited to dogs. Cats, rabbits, birds, and other common household pets can serve as emotional support animals when recommended by a licensed clinician.

The Difference

Service Animals vs. Emotional Support Animals

They serve different purposes, have different rights, and require different documentation. Here is the clear breakdown.

How It Works

How we provide ESA letters

A real clinical process — not a form you fill out online. Every letter is backed by a genuine evaluation from a licensed mental health professional.

01

Schedule a consultation

Book a telehealth consultation with Arri Wynn, LMSW. We will discuss your mental health history, symptoms, and whether an ESA is clinically appropriate for you.

02

Clinical assessment

During your session, Arri conducts a thorough clinical assessment to determine if an emotional support animal is a legitimate part of your mental health treatment plan.

03

Receive your ESA letter

If clinically appropriate, you receive a signed, dated ESA letter on professional letterhead — valid for one year and compliant with all federal and state requirements.

04

Use your letter

Present your letter to your landlord for housing accommodations. We provide ongoing support and renewal when your letter expires.

AKC-Licensed Evaluator

Service dog training that actually means something

A service dog vest bought online does not make a service dog. Real training does. Arri Wynn is a licensed AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator, and we build service dogs the right way — from foundational obedience through task-specific work and official certification.

AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator

Arri Wynn is a licensed AKC CGC evaluator, authorized to test and certify dogs through the American Kennel Club's nationally recognized program — the gold standard for good manners in dogs.

Structured training pathway

We guide you and your dog through a structured training pathway — from foundational obedience through the CGC test, and on to specialized task training for psychiatric or medical service work.

Task-specific training

For clients who need a service dog, we help identify and train the specific tasks your dog will perform — from deep pressure therapy and interruption of anxiety spirals to grounding and alerting behaviors.

Testing & certification

When your dog is ready, Arri administers the AKC CGC test in person. Passing dogs receive official AKC certification, a key step in establishing your dog as a trained service animal.

Who This Helps

Who an ESA or service dog can help

If you recognize yourself in any of these, an emotional support animal or service dog may be a meaningful part of your treatment.

People with anxiety or depression

An ESA can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression through consistent companionship, routine, and emotional grounding.

People with PTSD or trauma

The presence of a support animal can help regulate the nervous system and provide comfort during difficult moments.

People with phobias or panic disorder

A support animal can interrupt panic cycles and provide a calming anchor during episodes of fear or overwhelm.

People with loneliness or isolation

For those navigating grief, isolation, or major life transitions, an ESA provides meaningful daily connection and purpose.
